As an employer of approximately 2,500 people and a corporate neighbour in regions around the world, Agnico-Eagle strives to build stakeholder relationships based on trust, open dialogue, mutual respect and understanding. We are committed to enriching the lives of our employees and their families and to benefiting the communities in which we operate.

Employer of Choice
Our Pinos Altos project in Mexico is quickly establishing itself as an employer of choice in the region, in part because of its high-quality facilities and benefits. Instead of setting up trailers during exploration and construction, we chose to build distinctly Mexican cottages, which are permanent structures made by local contractors using local wood and materials. The cottages will accommodate up to 300 people. Once the Pinos Altos operation is up and running, we expect that virtually all of the 200 people employed at the mine will be Mexican, with approximately 50% from neighbouring communities.
Socially Responsible Company Designation
In 2008, Agnico-Eagle Mexico was pleased to receive certification as a socially responsible company from the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Centro Mexicano para a Filantropia) and the Alliance for Social Responsibility of Enterprises (Alianza por la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial de Mexico). Certification involves an evaluation of the company’s practices, and is renewed annually based on performance.
Community Service Awards
Agnico-Eagle’s newly established Paul Penna Award Program recognizes employees who make extraordinary contributions to their local communities. This program is named after the company’s late founder. It is intended to keep Paul Penna’s legacy alive and cultivate the values he brought to the organization. Each year, there is one global award winner and separate winners for each of five geographic regions. Awards include a major financial contribution to the community initiative embraced by the recipients.
Community Events
We aim to maintain broad-based, ongoing community support for our activities and devote time and resources to nurturing dialogue and building relationships with local citizens. At Goldex, located right in the town of Val d’Or, Quebec, we held an open and conducted site tours for the community in 2007. Shortly after our arrival at Meadowbank, we held a barbecue and event that attracted more than 500 local people. We also publish newsletters in both Val d’Or and Baker Lake to keep the communities informed of the activities at these sites.
Historic Agreement in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut
In April 2008, we entered into a Water Compensation Agreement with the Kivalliq Inuit Association which will cover the life of our Meadowbank project. The agreement is the first of its kind for the Kivalliq Region since the inception of the Nunavut Land Claim agreement which gave the Inuit of Nunavut rights over land and water in parts of the Nunavut territory.
Enterprise of the Year Award
Agnico-Eagle was designated Enterprise of the Year in the large company category at the Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce’s Mercuriades Gala in April 2008. This was the first time for a mining company to receive this prestigious award, which recognized Agnico-Eagle’s $239-million investment in the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region over the past 18 months, and its importance as a local employer of up to 1,000 people with an annual payroll of approximately $114 million.
